Write a song together: Friday 12th December, 2008
 |
- Venue: SaraWiwa Bar
- Entry: FREE (However, performance & competition limited to BandSoc members)
- Doors : 8.00pm
|
Ever wondered what it takes to write a song? Bags of talent?... Sometimes... Sense of humour?... Mostly... Determination?... Always... An audience?... Are you kidding!?
We have to say, band soc members were few... Most of us were playing in the committee band, but we had A LOT of fun writing a song with the fantastic input of (mostly) another society who happened to be in the SaraWiwa at the time... Guys, you rocked!
Subject, styles, moods and keys were all done via audience participation - as were the sometimes 'choice' lyrics. We wrote a song in D minor, a moody, indie vibe called 'Being in love with Kyle' (a guy who was glad he sat on the front row table) detailing the sad, sad story of a young man who got caught up in the French Revolution - and well, lost his head over Kyle... We also wrote a song about 'Time travel' in an 80's unk style revving up about a Delorian and speeding past 88 mph... and finally a red-neck-rock song about 'me and my brother in a pickup truck' and well, some stuff what we really shouldn't be putt'n up here 'bout things them say 'bout country folk.
There was an open competition for the best 'version' of any of these songs, but hell, no-one came up with any so we (the bandsoc committee band) won! Next time - make sure you're there to show us up for the alchol hampered ham-fisters we are!

BandSoc opened its arms to the unfortunate fortunates who are not yet addicted to guitar... to vagabonds and strays and even drummers who want to put down their bludgeoning tools, wipe the drool from their mouths and have a go at something a little trickier ...
*Ducks to avoid flying drum stick*
All beginners who fancied learning a bit of guitar were welcomed to our beginners guitar session. Our co-pres Kiran (a grade 8 classical guitarist no less) took usthrough some basics as we learned a song together: Wild thing by the troggs. All beginner abilities are always welcome at our classes from totally raw to know a few chords as we use a play-along at your own pace method.
The score from the session(in the form of a printable poster with handy chord diagrams) is available for download here.

We start in the SaraWiwa from 8.00pm for a few cheeky £1 pints before heading off to some nightclub somewhere in Liverpool till horribly, horribly drunk*!
*University 'safe' drinking policy disclaimer... humour, of course only joking, of course....

Open Mic Night - Friday November 7th, 2008
 |
- Venue: James E Brown Room, LGOS
- Entry: Free to BandSoc members, Guests £2
- Doors: 8.00pm
|
One of several incarnations of event that gives you a chance to perform ...
The society aims to hold about four open mic nights spread out across the year, in the expectation that it will give everyone who wants an informal chance to perform.
We have put on numberous open mic nights since we started and are now expert at making you sound good! We have all of our own equipment and sound techs who manage to make a silk purse out of a rough cut sows ear every time.
We have acoustic pickups available for your guitars as well as amplifiers for your electric and electro-acoustics and high quality directional mics for your instruments. A keyboard and PA are also set up by our sound techs for your use. We even allow the use of our own instruments for those without. Plus the option of a bit of improvised backing from our rhythm section. Add that to the general incompetence of the bandsociety committee running the show and you get a great evening with a chilled athmosphere where you can dare to try new things!
We stress the informal in these nights, as they are primarily a supportive area for people who are both old hands at playing in front of crowds and those doing so for the first time.
Just bring your guitars, your talent and your chums, we'll do the rest!

We will also bring along our 'wanted and seeking' sheet for you to add your details (if you want) which we will then send out in our e-mail bulletin to the membership list.
Yes, last year, someone did bring a guitar and some of us did end up sitting around on the floor for a bit of a strum and a sing-along. Sad, true, but really quite shamefully enjoyable. I can't promise there won't be a repeat performance and we hope that won't put you off too much!
We'll see you there then...

AGM / End of term blow-out - Monday, April 28th
|
- Venue: SaraWiwa bar, LGOS
- Time: 4.00pm-6.00pm
|
Term ended early this year, so we had our AGM on Monday, 28th April. This is where we decided things for the upcomming year. If you didn't come - then you can't moan about what we're doing this year as well as what we've been spending our money on!
As ever, all BandSoc members were welcome to attend and we discussed, decided and announced a range of things from equipment to venues to people and back again.
We decided to blow a whole fistfull of our dollars on new equipment and repairs in the bandroom - so you might be in for a pleasant surprise in the new term.
As ever - we remain open to suggestions and people... Just come along - or even email the society. You might just like it!
We then drank ourselves into oblivion. Oh sorry, no we didn't - the university has a policy on 'responsible drinking' - yeah, I remember now.
Open Mic Night - April 2008
Have you ever had the feeling you've forgotten something... Yeah man, something happened. I can't remember. We really should make a better note of these open mic nights...

Our Last Showcase of the accademic year supported two of our favourite Band-Society Bands... 'Aprentis' and 'Iguana'... and of course your very favouritist favourite and ours - the good old BandSoc committee band 'House of Jack'.
came second in the much contested Battle of the Bands competition last year... the results of which almost caused a riot(!) and we knew they would headline our first event with some gusto!
also came through the heats in last year's battle of the bands, but then because of a clash of scheduling were unable to compete in the finals. We think they could have given Rainbowphonic Experience and Aprentis a run for their money and hope you'll agree that they rocked the stage at this event!
 |
Last, but by no means least and opening the night off with a... fizzle... was your very own BandSociety House band babeeee! The line-up is looking hot this year with talent abound on most instruments and then of course Ed, who tops it all off like a glace cherry... (you know, the ones... they look all like they're gonna be great, but don't taste of much and leave a funny taste in your mouth, ahem, only kidding Eddie, Mr President, Sir...) |
If you want to check out either of the bands that were showcased take a look-see at their myspace pages:
If you think it should have been you then great! Give us an email and tell us about your material, we will pop in and see you rehearsing some time and who knows next time it might be you!
We hope to put up some of the pictures from these events soon!

 |
- Venue: The SaraWiwa Bar

As part of our remit to build bridges with other societies and encourage wider participation in student events across the Guild of Students, we ran our November Open Mic Night in association with the Guild Women's Group. ALL WERE WELCOME (whatever flavour of student) and we put no restriction on the music - but are glad that many took the opportunity to encourage and celebrate women's contributions to the contemporary music scene.
The event also included (at some point) a raffle for the benefit of a women's refuge and shelter (with some very interesting prizes!) and raised £120 alone!
Thanks to all those who brought their, your talent and friends... catch us next time if you missed it!

Yes, this was your big chance to talk to us and sign up. For those of you who did - hurrah! I hope you signed up to the mailing list and maybe even taken the plunge and joined up. Freshers Open Mic Night - Thursday 20th September, 7pm :
- Venue: SaraWiwo Bar
- Entry: Free
We had a hell-of-a-good time at this, our first event of the new academic year. This event was held in association with the Guild and aimed at getting home student Freshers oot and aboot - which it fair did - and my, did we discover some talent! Archie Sylvester - you can really play that guitar now can't you!? In fact, thanks to all those brave souls who got up and played for us - and maybe realised that it's not so scary after all.
If you missed it, don't worry, there will be another one along soon and we would encourage you to bring your guitars and / or your ears and enjoy the ambience of Liverpool student's live music.
